– visible cultural landmarks of Haugesund

The tower houses in Haugesund became a distinct part of the city’s architecture starting in the 1890s. They were especially common on wooden corner buildings, where small and large towers marked the building’s position in the city grid. This trend was inspired by European historicism, which emphasized corner markers and monumental architectural features.
The most important figure behind the tower houses was Einar Halleland (1860–1944), Haugesund’s first architect. Halleland developed a wide repertoire of small towers, often placed on corners, and these quickly became a hallmark of Haugesund.
According to documentation from Haugalandmuseet, tower houses are especially found in: Skjoldaveien, Tuhauggata, Haraldsgata, parts of Risøy and Hasseløy. In 2021, the museum completed a full registration of all tower houses in the city.
Today, there are around 70 towers in Haugesund, which has earned the city the nickname “The City of Towers”. This number is based on the museum’s surveys.
The tower houses are more than decorative elements they have become part of Haugesund’s identity.
Local politicians and heritage advocates describe them as some of the city’s most distinctive cultural landmarks, and several buildings have been subjects of preservation debates. They are considered important for the city’s historical character, the visual experience of the town center and cultural heritage and local identity.
Why ended Haugesund up with so many towers? Several factors contributed:
– Population and economic growth after the herring boom created demand for new homes and commercial buildings
– Corner lots in the grid layout naturally invited tower placement
– Architectural fashion in Europe made towers popular
– Local pride, towers became a status symbol for property owners
– Halleland’s strong influence on the city’s building traditions
Today, the tower houses stand as some of Haugesund’s most visible cultural landmarks. Several have been restored, while others are in need of preservation and maintenance.
