– the one and only

Hotell Amanda’s story begins in 1903, when the distinctive waterfront building at Haugesund’s inner harbour first opened as a hotel. For the first half of the 20th century it was a central meeting place for travellers and locals, before the hotel eventually closed in the 1950s and the building was used for other purposes.
A return shaped by film culture
In 1989, the building once again opened its doors as a hotel—this time under the name Hotel Amanda, inspired by the Amandaprisen, Norway’s national film award. The relaunch tied the hotel closely to Haugesund’s growing role as a film city, especially through the annual Norwegian International Film Festival.
Inside, the hotel embraced this identity:
- Hallways and rooms are decorated with photographs of well‑known films and actors.
- Each room is named after a Norwegian movie.
- Display cases and old film equipment highlight Norwegian film history.
A cultural landmark by Smedasundet
With its location directly on the quay overlooking Smedasundet, the hotel has remained a natural gathering point during major cultural events such as the film festival and Sildajazz. Over time, it has become known not only as a place to stay, but as a small cultural institution that reflects Haugesund’s connection to cinema and storytelling.
The hotel was completely renovated in 2026 and is a hotel in the Strawberry chain. Read more about the hotel
